What is independent Living?

Essentially, independent living is living just like everyone else. It is having opportunities to make decisions that affect one’s life. It is the ability to pursue activities of one’s own choosing—limited only in the same ways that people w/out disabilities are limited.

Independent living is having the right & opportunity to pursue a course of action of one’s choosing.

The philosophy & goals of independent living are to guarantee full & equal participation in society. This means access to housing, employment, health care…& to society in general

Since it’s founding, around a kitchen table in 1976, by a group of parents & professional..

Starting with a budget of $60,000 and a staff of two, WILA is now managing a staff of over 70 and a budget of 3.5 million.

While much has changed over the years, one thing has stayed the same, WILSA is commited to life in the community, filled with personal choices.
